In 1972 was still finishing up my Navy service and was unable to attend my cousin Marcia's wedding. She was living in Hawaii with her husband and my cousins sang this beautiful Hawaiian adaptation of an old hymn (Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us) at their wedding ceremony.
Just recently I rediscovered a 1972 recording that my cousin's husband had made. Thanks to YouTube and Google I not only found the lyrics, but a good idea how to play it on the guitar.
One staple of Hawaiian music is Slack-key Guitar in which the instrument is tuned to open tunings. I noticed in the video that Jesse Tinsley seemed to playing in an open G tuning (most of the strings are tuned down, "slackened"). The "E" string is slackened to ""D" giving a lovely bass note.
Here are two renditions, the first is my cousins and the next is my YouTube find. Enjoy!
