I had the opportunity to meet Dr. Stanley at the Lowell Folk festival

We've lost another great one

Dr. Ralph Edmund Stanley (February 25, 1927 - June 23, 2016)

I can't even count the number of times I've listened to "Pretty Polly", "Rank Stranger", "Palms of Victory" and others. No one had a better voice for singing mountain music, and very few banjo players could play both clawhammer and scruggs style so well.
I got my first banjo when I was a teenager. I guess I was 15, 16 years old. My aunt had this old banjo, and Mother bought it for me ... paid $5 for it, which back then was probably like $5,000. [My parents] had a little store, and I remember my aunt took it out in groceries.[1]
"God has had his hand on my career for the past 68 years. It's up to him when I will quit. I have no plans of slowing down. I love my fans, and I love performing." -- Dr. Ralph Stanley - 2015

Still my all time favorite
