One of the items that was donated to the Green Center Recycling Center was an issue of Life Magazine dated October 5, 1942. I'm interested in that era and enjoyed looking at the advertisements. Almost all of them deal with the war effort in patriotic terms, urging citizens to conserve fuel, collect scrap metal and buy war bonds.
I came across an advertisement for a movie starring Ronald Reagan. Thanks to YouTube I found a clip.
Life Magazine, October 5, 1942
Ronnie plays a trick on his interrogator in this clip. Apparently having the technology for high altitude offered us a strategic advantage.
In the same magazine I found this advertisement which gives further credence to the advantage of high altitude flight. The Lockheed P-38 Lightning could climb to 20,000 feet.
