Christmas in Newtown, Connecticut - 2013

What can anyone possibly say to parents who see this date as the time that their child was shot to death. I'm so sorry for these folks. Cruelly we learn of yet another shooting in Colorado almost on the same date. Something is terribly wrong but I have no answers. Let's fix this.

Daily Analog Photo - The Atomic Cannon

Among my boxes of slides I found this shot of the "Atomic Cannon".

Which genius thought this was a good idea for the battlefield? Our tax dollars at work back in the good old 1950s.

I found some videos of it in operation. When they tested it I was 7 years old, but well out of range.
Makes one nostalgic for the cold war doesn't it?

Frisbee time

I'm not  usually a fan of animated GIFs but this one was really cool.
I can guess you'll watch it over and over again!
I suspect the spiral of cameras surrounding the guy had a lot to do with the creation of this.

What I have in common with Dick Cheney (just one thing)

We certainly don't agree on politics and I never shot my best friend in the face with a shotgun, BUT we both have pacemakers. Also it appears that Cheney has a Medtronics model as do I. However he got the one with a cardiverter defibrillator (ICD). I did not need that feature. I certainly would not have one with WiFi capabilities and risk the chance of being hacked by someone with a grudge. I just have to be careful with those radio towers and big Neodymium magnets  (I'll never be a Prius mechanic).

A question for the paranoid, Who killed Barnaby Jones?

Unlike Cheney, I made sure I didn't have WiFi capability

Suggested Post from Facebook - My Generic Response

For some reason Facebook has decided that I'm a lonely Tea Party, INFOWARS , Birther kind of guy who needs an older girlfriend and a true political cause.

Embedded in the stream of Facebook status updates are advertisements for "dates" with well endowed women and conspiracy groups with names that begin with PATRIOT, FREEDOM, VALUES etc

I went to the trouble to add a comment or two, but now realize a generic blog posting will save me time and energy.

So anytime Farcebook has a "suggested post" that features a picture of Ted Cruz, Sean Hannity, Sarah Palin, "Newt" Gingrich, Rush "Oxycontin" Limpbag, Glenn Beck or any of their ilk, with some offensive message, you can expect  THIS link to be posted as a comment.  You won't see a thumbs up and I'm too proper to use my other finger.

Dear Facebook, your "Suggested Post" has put me in a sour mood.

Give me a break

I say:  "Ted and Sarah,  just shut up, please shut up
You do not represent me, you are publicity hounds. It's tedious to see you on television"

Ted and Sarah, If you really had concern about "honoring" veterans you might work on ending the shutdown so folks who work for the Veterans department could get back to work. Of course those optics would not be as self serving as using WWII veterans as a backdrop for your venom.

Other may Veterans have different ideas about this, that is fine, they can share those thoughts in their own blog. This is entirely my rant.

And the lesson of this story is

You may rant and rave that you don't like green eggs and ham, give speeches and threaten to shut down the government, but try, just  it try and you may decide you DO like green eggs and ham

Digital Equipment Corporation

Recently I came across a Facebook group for Digital Equipment Corporation with a surprising number of members (6125 as of this posting). I'm constantly meeting folks who have worked for DEC at some point in their careers. The majority of them say it was the best place they had ever worked.  I spent about 13 years in Westminster working as a technician. I started in July 1973, testing timing boards for the 11/45 (the TIG board). Later on to other New Hampshire sites in Nashua and Merrimack.

Like others, I transitioned into Compaq and then to HP and took the final early retirement. But I'm still in the industry for a startup company.

I decided to post a few photos of the DEC years for the Facebook community and anyone else that was lucky enough to work for this company in the Ken Olson days.

Fifty years ago

Fifty years again the Ku Klux Klan dynamited a Birmingham church killing 4 little girls. Sadly the KKK is estimated to still have 5,000 to 8,000 followers. Why?

Here we go again, an open rant to vandals

What is the story about vandalism in New Ipswich? If you don't like it here, get the hell out. Believe me you won't be missed. Burning tires, trashing the pool. What is the matter with you?

It's bad enough we have to pick up twisted tea bottles and cans on our morning walk but setting fire to a porta-potty that was provided for kids to use on a ball field?  Don't you like kids? What is wrong with you people?

When I first came to this town, we used to swim at the beach across from River Road. The land owners were okay with that and then some jerks decided to break some bottle on the beach. How brilliant is that? Guess what? no more swimming.

I repeat, if you are unhappy with our town, if it doesn't meet your expectations, a whole world awaits you.

How cool is this... really how cool is this

Remember when you put baseball cards or balloons in your spokes for an effect.
Imagine how cool that would be with LED and computer technology?

Roswell New Mexico - July 8, 1947

One of my all time favorite news events happened 66 years ago today

RAAF Captures Flying Sauce On Ranch in Roswell Region

Naturally Google found a clever way to commemorate the event with a Doodle. I had to cheat because I'm not good with games.

Shame on Goodwill - Look for alternatives

Just saying, how can you justify a six figure salary when you pay your workers less than $1 an hour? I'm looking for alternatives like the Vietnam Veterans of America

A dirty job but someone has to do it

Next time you are asked to change a diaper or clean up some cat vomit, take a second and realize that there are some really nasty jobs. Wonder how Mike Rowe would handle this one?

Hot and Smelly? Get Doc Bottoms Aspray

I get odors in special places

That's why I always spray with Aspray

Don't bother looking for the website, it is defunct. This advertisement was pulled, but it remains a personal favorite. Thank you Adam Jay and Doc Bottoms.

Free Edward Snowden Petition? Excuse me?

It's true, 107,207 folks have petitioned the Obama Adminstration to:

Pardon Edward Snowden

This is petition text:
"Edward Snowden is a national hero and should be immediately issued a a full, free, and absolute pardon for any crimes he has committed or may have committed related to blowing the whistle on secret NSA surveillance programs."

How embarrassing for the petition signers. They  side with a guy who ran away first to China (a place that doesn't spy on it's citizens) then ran away to Russia (another place that doesn't spy on it's citizens). I suppose he will eventually show up in North Korea like Dennis Rodman.
Am I the only one that sees the irony?

Fathers Day BBQ

My family and kids are going to prepare a BBQ dinner for me today. The weather is perfect. I plan to sit by the river and watch for ospreys or anything else I may spot.

Naturally the beverage of choice will be something with a complex flavor. I know folks that make beer, they make great beer. It never lasts more than a few days before being consumed.

Karl could be a spokesman for this brew

Alas

Of course it is always a challenge to find a way to OPEN a bottle or CAN of beer. Being guys (or gals), we need to be a bit creative.

Bumblehive - More than George Orwell could have every imagined

"Defending our Nation. Securing The Citizens"

The Good Old Days

The NSA is constructing a massive data center in Utah code-named Bumblehive. The amount of computing power and storage of this facility is staggering. When I started working in the computer industry in the early 1970s disk capacity was measured in kilobytes. We had magnetic core memory boards which looked like fine tapestry. As I remember they were capable of holding a few thousand bits of data.

It was long before Kilobytes became Megabytes, Megabytes became Terabytes, Terabytes became Gigabytes, Gigabytes became Terabytes. My current PC has 1.35 Terabyte of storage with 612 Gigabyte of free space. It holds thousands of photos, programs, documents and  music files.

Technology advanced,  Terabytes became Petabytes, Petabytes became Exabytes. This data center will have storage measured in Zettabytes. That is a decimal number 10 to the 24th power. Of course tied to this storage will be a massive super computer. I can only imagine it becoming self aware at some point in my lifetime, just like HAL or Colossus: The Forbin Project.

I'm okay with this to some degree. After all I'm publishing this on Google's Blogger platform. Google already knows everything about me and has my photos, home address and credit card information. I like Google, they promised to do no evil. I hope my government will do the same.

Beyond a Shadow of a Doubt

You've got the words to change a nation but you're biting your tongue
You've spent a life time stuck in silence afraid you'll say something wrong
If no one ever hears it how we gonna learn your song
So come on ,come on Come on, come on

You've got a heart as loud as lions
So why let your voice be tamed?
Baby we're a little different there's no need to be ashamed
You've got the light to fight the shadows so stop hiding it away
Come on, Come on

Goodbye Eastern, Hello Haffner's

In my previous post I expressed my displeasure about receiving a bill for propane that I didn't buy. I fell short of a minimum required purchase amount.

Eastern came and took away my tanks which was a bit of surprise since they didn't give me any notice. Thankfully Haffner's Oil came to the rescue the next day with right size tank.

Type eventvwr, check harmless errors, and download our MALWARE... TRUST US!

I guess it was my turn to get this call. As I was following the steps, I was googling for the gotcha. When I hung up, the woman (with the heavy indian accent) actually had the temerity to call me back and  tell me I was being impolite. I'll admit to being a little peeved. Some folks deal with this in a more creative and entertaining way such as this YouTube selection:

Cries from the ghost town that is Google+

I realize that Google+ is supposed to be a ghost town. There are a number of online articles comparing the Google+ to Facebook as if the two were equivalent.

Let's be clear, Facebook is a social network. A place to leave short messages to your friends and play games together. Google+ is a platform or infrastructure.  Google+ has a social aspect with its circle mechanism but it is not simply that.

The latest upgrades have taken Google+ to a brand new level and I suspect are the reason the stock topped $900 yesterday. Integration with existing products has been improved and I like the new clean look.

Since I use it heavily for sharing photos I was pleasantly surprised to see improvements to the photo search algorithms. Here is a graphic outlining the latest changes.

Sandy Hook Mother's Day Card

I cannot fathom the anguish these grieving families are experiencing since the Sandy Hook massacre.

On this Mother's Day the Sandy Hook Promise foundation has posted an online Mother's Day Card for the mothers of the slain children.
